Education, Employability and Skills

We are constantly reminded, in many Govt. reports and studies that Derry is one of the most deprived cities in the UK. Levels of disadvantage in Strabane and Limavady are equally deplorable, and Donegal perhaps worst of all.

On skills, despite success and continuing improvements in performance, the Northern Ireland education system has a legacy of under-achievement at the lower end of the education and skills spectrum. There are fewer jobs for low skilled workers, who are not equipped to operate in a technology environment, and who without training, will eventually fall by the wayside. Across all industries, the complexity of jobs is increasing, resulting in a growth in relative skill demand.

This Chamber has recognised the issue of Education, Employability and Skills as a Key area of focus. A number of issues and related activities have been identified.

  • Essential Skills in the workplace

  • Workplace Delivery of Training

  • Engagment with the FE Sector

  • Development of our University

  • Identification of skills needs

Chamber is working closely with providers, government and employers on a number of projects to address gaps in this area.
