You Are Special - James!

Local business leaders attending the 53rd Annual Dinner of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce gave a standing ovation to well known businessman James Doherty, on the announcement that he has been recognised with this year's Chamber Business Achievement Award.

Even at the mature age of 86, James remains active in the family business, as non-executive chairman of James Doherty Meats. James continues to make daily visits to the factory. This year he welcomed his two grandsons, James and Matthew, into the organisation. This is now the sixth generation of the Doherty family to work within the company.

Sinead McLaughlin, Chamber's Chief Executive, said that she was delighted and honoured to hand over the award to Mr Doherty. "He is an inspiration to all of us," she said.

Sinead told the 300 strong audience: "Since James first entered business life in 1945, he has seen some real economic shifts, with globalization, the rise of the emerging markets and the internet changing the way we do business. But one thing has remained constant - the power of the entrepreneur. James's optimism, ability to spot opportunities and sheer hard work continues to drive positive change and inspire others."

Chamber President, Jim Sammon, said: "James has a strong belief in Corporate Social Responsibility; this is witnessed by his huge contribution to the life of the community, particularly in the field of education. As a father of 10, he had his hands full - he could have very easily just got on with his own business, but he didn't, he always made time to contribute to the bigger society and it is this admirable quality that gives an example to us all."

Doherty Special Mince is iconic in the North West, but the applause from Chamber members saluting both the business and the civic achievements of James Doherty left him in no doubt that he is also very special in the hearts of the business community.
