The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the result of four years of work by the EU to bring data protection legislation into line with new, previously unforeseen ways that data is now used. Currently, the UK relies on the Data Protection Act 1998, which was enacted following the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive, but this will be superseded by the new legislation. It introduces tougher fines for non-compliance and breaches, and gives people more say over what companies can do with their data. It also makes data protection rules more or less identical throughout the EU.
Please join us as we gather in the Millennium Forum in Derry/Londonderry to discuss these changes that will affect your business after May 2018. We are delighted to be bringing you event in partnership with Ulster Bank as part of their economic support of business owners in the area.
We are also delighted to welcome Claire Wilson as keynote speaker to the event. Claire is a senior solicitor at Edwards & Co. in Belfast’s City Centre. She has worked in a number of areas since qualification and has latterly focused on personal injury, insolvency and commercial disputes, heading up the firm’s Litigation Department. Claire enjoys the variety of representing and advising individuals, housing associations, small/medium enterprises and large corporate organisations. Claire has taken the lead in providing clients with advice on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), its implications, and how they should best prepare for the changes which will be enforced from May 2018. Claire has recently delivered several GDPR specific seminars and workshops to a wide ranging number of local businesses and organisations.
