Chamber congratulates new MLAs

The Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has congratulated the new MLAs on their election for the Foyle constituency and urged them to make urgent and measurable progress on the local economy.

Chamber chief executive Sinead McLaughlin said:

“We send our sincere congratulations to the six newly elected MLAs: Mark H Durkan, Colum Eastwood, Eamonn McCann, Raymond McCartney, Martin McGuinness and Gary Middleton.

“We urge the MLAs to prioritise the economy in their ongoing work.  In particular, it is essential that they secure the substantial expansion of Magee to the agreed level of 9,400 FTE students as fast as is possible.  It is also essential that upgrades to the road links to Belfast and Dublin are secured and are, along with the substantial expansion of Magee, included within the Programme for Government and fully funded within the Budget.

“It is clear that the Foyle electorate are as impatient as the Chamber for faster delivery of projects to improve the economy and to provide more employment.  The coming Assembly mandate must be the one that delivers for Derry’s economy.

“The Chamber would also like to place on record its appreciation of the work of the defeated MLAs.  Maeve McLaughlin has been a steadfast advocate for the expansion of Magee over several years.  Gerry Diver, although only an MLA for a short period, has also been a strong proponent of Magee expansion.”
